Computer Assistant – Programmer/Web Application Developer

Rate: 10-16$/hr and/or negotiable depending on experience


10-20 hrs/week – flexible work schedule during semester

20 hr/week or more during summer

Job Description:

Undergraduate computer assistant positions are open within the CyberInfrastructure and Geospatial Information Laboratory (CIGI), starting immediately. The successful candidates will work on one or more projects related to GIS applications, spatial analysis, modeling, and cyberinfrastructure.

Applicants are expected to have good understanding of programming concepts. Exposure to commercial, open source GIS software and/or Web GIS application development will be a plus. Successful applicants would expect to work in a world-class GIS research group setting, and have close interactions with faculty, staff, and other students within CIGI.

Sophomores and Juniors who are able to continue working during summer and the next academic year are preferred. Stipend depends on qualification and extension after the first semester depends on performance and funding availability.


  • Familiar with the following Web application development technologies
    • server-side programming (e.g. developing business application logic in C#, or PHP or similar languages);
    • client side programming (e.g. JavaScript, JavaScript libraries (e.g. ExtJS), Ajax, JSON, or similar frameworks);
  • Have working knowledge of HTML, and CSS;
  • Knowledge about Web interface development;
  • Ability to write solid and elegant code;
  • Working knowledge about GIS tools and technologies (e.g. ArcGIS, Openlayers, GoogleMaps API) is a plus;
  • Be able to work independently in a cross-functional collaboration environment with multiple teams; and
  • Have excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
