Research Assistant - GIS

Rate: 10-16$/hr and/or negotiable depending on experience


10-20 hrs/week – flexible work schedule during semester

20 hr/week or more during summer

Job Description:

Multiple undergraduate research assistant positions in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Science are open within the CyberInfrastructure and Geospatial Information Laboratory (CIGI), starting immediately. Successful candidates will work on one or more projects related to GIS applications, spatial analysis, modeling, and cyberinfrastructure.

Applicants are expected to have experience in GIS technologies and exposure to commercial and/or open source GIS software. Knowledge and experience in advanced Web technologies or geovisualization are desirable, but not required. Successful applicants would expect to work in a world-class GIS research group setting, have close interactions with faculty, staff, and other students within CIGI, and will be afforded with plenty of opportunities to learn from and work on newest GIS technologies like ESRI ArcGIS, various GIS applications, and cutting edge GIS software development and testing.

Sophomores and Juniors who are able to continue working during summer and the next academic year are preferred. Stipend depends on qualification and experience. Position extension after the first semester depends on performance and availability of funding.


  • Proficient in the use of GIS tools and technologies (e.g. ESRI ArcGIS, Openlayers, or Google Maps API);
  • Exposure to Web-development technologies and geovisualization is a plus;
  • Be able to work independently with with multiple cross-functional teams; and
  • Have excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
